Jet lag isn't just about distance. It's about direction. We modelled recovery between 27 major cities. Flying east averages ~5.8 days to feel normal; flying west, only ~4.0. Here are the routes that hit hardest.

Your internal clock naturally runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so it prefers to delay, which is what flying west asks of it. Flying east forces it to advance, which it resists. That's why a New York to Asia trip wrecks you for a week while the return leg fades faster, even though the distance is identical. The practical upshot: plan the least recovery time for eastbound legs, and use morning light heading east, evening light heading west, to speed things along.

Methodology & source

Recovery estimated with a common sleep-science rule of thumb: the body clock re-entrains ~1 hour/day eastbound (harder) and ~1.5 hours/day westbound (easier). Time shifts over 12 hours re-entrain the shorter way around the clock (so nothing exceeds a 12-hour effective shift), and recovery is capped at ~9 days. Standard-time offsets used for 27 cities.
