Every year travellers destroy a hair dryer (or worse, start a small fire) because of one misunderstanding: they think a travel adapter protects their devices. It doesn’t. Here’s the difference, and how to know what you actually need before you plug anything in.
Adapter vs converter: the one distinction that matters
- A plug adapter changes the shape so your plug physically fits the wall socket. That’s all it does.
- A voltage converter changes the electricity itself, stepping foreign voltage down to what your device expects.
An adapter does nothing to the voltage. Plug a 120V-only device into a 230V socket with just an adapter and you’re sending it double the power it was built for.
Why this keeps happening: the 220–240V world
Here’s the fact that catches North American travellers out: about 86% of countries run on 220–240 volts. Only a minority (mostly the US, Canada, parts of Latin America and Japan) use 100–127V. So if you’re coming from the US, most of the world delivers roughly double the voltage your devices grew up on.
The plug shape is the obvious difference you notice. The voltage is the invisible one that does the damage.

The 30-second check that saves your devices
Flip your charger or device over and read the fine print near the plug:
- “INPUT: 100–240V” (a range) → it’s dual-voltage. It handles the whole world. You only need a plug adapter. This covers almost all phone chargers, laptop bricks, camera chargers, and modern electric toothbrushes.
- “INPUT: 120V” (a single voltage) → it’s single-voltage. Abroad it needs a real voltage converter, not just an adapter. This is where hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons live.
That one label tells you everything. When in doubt, assume high-wattage heat-generating gadgets (anything with a heating element) are single-voltage until proven otherwise.
What to actually pack
- One good universal adapter. It covers the plug shapes of virtually every country, so you don’t need a different one per trip.
- Leave the single-voltage hair tools at home if you can: buy a cheap dual-voltage travel version, or use what the hotel provides. A voltage converter for a hair dryer is bulky, heavy, and often disappointing.
- Trust your dual-voltage chargers. Phone, laptop, camera: adapter only, no converter, no worries.
Frequency (50 vs 60 Hz): should you care?
Most countries run at 50 Hz; North America at 60 Hz. For chargers and electronics it’s a non-issue. It only matters for a few things with precise motors or clocks, rare for a traveller. Voltage is the thing to watch; frequency almost never is.
The bottom line
An adapter fits the plug; a converter protects the device. Nearly everything you carry is dual-voltage and only needs the adapter, but check the label on anything with a heating element before you plug in. Sixty seconds of reading fine print beats a fried device and a burnt-smell hotel room.
