A US passport is one of the world’s most powerful: it clears most borders with no visa arranged in advance. But “can I get in” is only half of a trip. The other half is what you spend once you land, and that varies enormously.
So we took every country a US passport enters visa-free and ranked them by overall price level, indexed to the United States at 100. The cheapest is Bulgaria at 21, where everyday prices are roughly a fifth of what you’d pay at home, so the same budget lasts almost five times as long.
If you want cheap without going far off the beaten path, the sweet spot sits around 31. Malaysia, Thailand, and Turkey are all major, well-served destinations where your money still goes about three times further than in the US. Tunisia at 28 and Nicaragua at 31 round out the accessible end.
One caveat worth stating plainly: cheap and easy to enter often correlates with less-touristed or higher-advisory places. Price level measures prices, not safety or how ready a country is for visitors. Angola, Tajikistan, and Lesotho are genuinely inexpensive and genuinely open to a US passport, but they ask more of a traveler than Thailand does. Always check your government’s current travel advisory before you book. We also excluded countries under an active-conflict advisory from this list.
And visa-free rarely means unlimited. Most of these grant a set stay, from 30 days in Tajikistan and Angola to 120 in Tunisia, so confirm the specific limit for your trip before you go.
